cape Gette CAPE LIFE FRID I APRIL 16- MONDAY, APRIL 19, 2010 63 LHS offers lectures on historic buildings, energy efficiency April 24 Energy efficiency and green buildings are key buzzwords in today's economy and in people's everyday lives. In recognition of the 2010 Lewes Historical Soci- ety Awards for Excellence in His- toric Preservation and the Lewes Tulip Festival, the society will present Jim Garrison of Frens & Frens Archi- tects of West Chester, Pa., who will give two lectures, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., Saturday, April 24, on energy effi- ciency, sus- Jim Garrison tainability and historic hous- es. Both lectures will take place at Lewes Presbyterian Church Hall and are free and open to the public. Garrison has been in architec- tural practice for nearly 30 years with a particular focus on work- ing with existing buildings for restoration, adaptive reuse or re- habilitation. In addition to deal- ing with existing buildings, he has used his extensive knowl- edge of architectural history and technology to produce award- winning new buildings and addi- tions using traditional design motifs. His project credits also involve many significant works involving National Historic Landmarks and iconic historic buildings for private clients, gov- ernment, institutional and non- profit clients. At 11 a.m., April 24, Garrison will hold a historic window workshop. It is frequently as- sumed that window replacement is required to substantially im- prove the energy efficiency of homes, but existing windows can often be weatherized to achieve efficiencies comparable to new windows. Garrison will examine this perspective and show how historic and older windows can be maintained and conserved to keep the historic appearance of the structure and add to a build- ing's energy efficiency. At I p.m., the second workshop will feature an ongoing discus- sion of how to look at historic properties for adaptive reuse and rehabilitation and how sustain- able historic preservation is a critical part of demonstrating that conservation and improve- ment of existing built resources are environmentally logical and economically viable elements. According to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, "His- toric preservation can - and should - be an important compo- nent of any effort to promote sustainable development. The conservation and improvement of our existing built resources, including reuse of historic and HOUSE WASH 302-752-8560 /ildew, m01d and s0it ruin homes- get your home cleaned t0d Spring is Here- !d 00h0se Gu|00e, rs Cle0r!.
