44 - CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, April 21 - April 27, 1995 Jack Lewis subject for filmmaker The renowned Sussex County painter Jack Lewis is the subject of a documentary by award-win- ing film maker David Petersen, re- cipient of numerous international film festival prizes and nominated for an Academy Award for his film on Sberrill's Restaurant and Bakery in Washington, D.C. Like the film about the restau- rant, the Lewis documentary fo- cuses on a small community, specifically Bridgeville where Lewis lives, and how it has been affected by this painter who, un- der the New Deal program, began chronicling the rural life of small towns during the Great Depres- sion. By using the artist's surround- ings as the setting for his story, the film illustrates how, for over 50 years, Lewis has given expression to the daily life of farmers, water- men and laborers, and how, as a teacher, he has enabled them to express themselves on their own. A brief excerpt from this film in progress will be shown at the Gala Opening Reception for an exhibi- tion of Jack Lewis's work and that of his daughter, Heather Lewes- Sargent. The reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, May 5 at The Homestead at Rehoboth Art League in Henlopen Acres. The exhibit runs through May 24 and hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mon- day through Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday. Petersen has been a director and editor of documentaries for over 15 years and his films have been shown at museums and festivals around the world, including the Centre Georges Pompidou, Muse- um of Modern Art, Hirschhorn Museum, Museum of American History, Library of Congress and The American Film Institute.
