'The Other Mother' offers unique services in the Cape Region By Jen Ellingsworth "Basically, anything that your mother would do, we'll do for you," said Karen Welter, founder of The Other Mother, describing the business she co-owns with Bonnie Simpkins. Providing services that include running errands for the elderly, pet care and transportation, house watch, office and home cleaning and shopping, The Other Mother venture began recently, after Wel- ter and Simpkins said they saw a niche in the Cape Region for such services. "My mother is 80 years old and lives in Pennsylvania," said Wel- ter, who also works as supervisor in a dental laboratory in New Cas- tle County. "Since I can't be around all the time to take care of her, I would love it if there were a service like ours that she could call on that would pick up a prescription, do grocery shopping and run er- rands." Seniors ages 65 and older also receive a 10 percent discount on services, they noted. All of their services are available to clients in the saltwater Sussex County ar- eas. "We're trying to make our serv- ices affordable, because we both know what it's like to be stuck and need someone to help," said Simpkins, a breast cancer sur- vivor. While their business places great emphasis on elder errands, The Other Mother offers an array of other features and services that are designed to meet their cus- tomers' changing needs. A house watch service enables homeowners to have peace of mind while they are away. Simp- kins and Welter will make sure all the details are covered, including lawn and garden care and storm check during inclement weather. "In the event of a storm situa- tion, we can keep close tabs on their house for them," said Simp- kins. "We'll even issue reports that we can fax to them to keep them apprised of the situation. That way, they don't have to be sitting around wondering what's going on." Another key element of the business is its pet care service, in which Simpkins and Welter will visit the home to look after pets while the owners are away. The service includes feeding, walking and even playing with pets and their favorite toys, said Simpkins. "Being pet owners ourselves, we definitely see the need for them to stay in their own environ- ment," she said. Transportation i also available to take pets to and from veterinar- ian or groomers' appointments. Weekly and daily rates apply, with discounts available for sub- sequent visits. Home and office cleaning are also offered, as well as specialty services such as gift wrapping and decorating during the holidays and vacation services that include stocking summer homes with food so vacationers don't have the hassle of shopping. The Other Mother is bonded and insured; references are avail- able on request.
