Art takes shape on Shields school walls this year Students at Shields Elementary School in Lewes have enjoyed watching artwork take shape on the school library walls during this school year. Local artists have contributed their talents for a PTO project to brighten up the library and encourage students to read. The artists, which included par- ents, students, family members of students and community mem- bers, painted a variety of charac- ters from favorite children's books. Artists worked during the day to allow children to see the artists create their characters as they se- lected books. The paintings include Madeline from the "Madeline" books by Ludwig Bemelmans, painted by Mig Reardon; a scene from Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House on the Prairie," painted by Rini Johnson; a scene from "The Mit- ten" by Jan Brett, painted by Karen Fox; Amelia Bedelia, from the books by Peggy Parish, paint- ed by Kerry Spieker; Curious George, from the books by H. A. Rey, painted by Laurel Riggins; the Cat in the Hat, from Dr. Suess books, painted by Judy Scrutch- field; Rainbow Fish, from the Rainbow Fish books by Marcus Pfister, painted by Cathy Bastian McCullough; and a scene from Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are," painted by George, Kathy, Rebecca and Han- nah Pepper.
