A Memory Café is designed for those experiencing mild memory loss, cognitive impairment or early-stage dementia, and care- givers (family or friend) of those affected. Attendees are asked about things that bring joy into their life and about things that stimulate brain activity toward memories of their life. They are encouraged to socialize and have fun. The Memory Café at CHEER is not a drop-off day program, is not a structured support group and does not provide medical services. The intention is to have both the senior and caregiver in attendance. Memory Cafes aid in the prevention of social isola- tion by bringing together people for a fun time. New friends are formed and caregivers are given the chance to have fun with the senior. Creative arts, music and games may be enjoyed to help stimulate happy memories. The Memory Café at CHEER is led by Gerri Cassidy, who has a wealth of experience as a pro- gram facilitator working with cognitively impaired individuals. She will design activities that will fit the likes and needs of those in attendance at each Memory Café at a CHEER location. The Memory Café at CHEER schedule is: Tuesdays, Long Neck CHEER Center, 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays,GeorgetownCHEER Center, 1:30 p.m.  Thursdays, Milton CHEER Center, 9:30 a.m. Thursdays, Greenwood CHEER Center, 1:30 p.m. Anyone 50 years and older who is interested in attending is welcome with their caregiver. There is no cost. For more in- formation, call a participating CHEER Activity Center. The pro- gram is funded by a grant by the Delaware Division of Aging and Adults with Physical Disabili- ties. CHEER is an independent nonprofit agency that promotes healthy and active lifestyles for Sussex County seniors to keep them in their homes by provid- ing an assortment of programs and activities.
