i Museum Continued from page 10 The model, originally construct- ed in 1956 as a training aid for academy recruits, replicates a Re- hoboth Beach home that was the scene of a 1943 murder that claimed the life of U.S. Army Warrant Officer John Worthing- ton. In a more technologically ad- vanced exhibit, visitors may con- trast that crime scene with a mod- ern-looking murder scene tucked in a quiet corner of the room. The interactive exhibit allows visitors to review elements in the scene as though they were investigating it like state police would. By the end of the presentation, the mys- tery is solved: they know "who- dunit" and what motivated the killer. According to Capt. Greg War- ren, who was instrumental in de- veloping the exhibits and who worked on the project since its in- ception, other educational pro- grams are also in the works. For example, he said, police are now developing a manual/workbook to be used primarily with student groups. Prior to taking their field trips to the museums, the teachers will have the manuals from which to introduce students to police histo- ry concepts. When students arrive at the museum, they will attend an introductory class. As they tour the museum, they will study ex- hibits in search of answers to questions in their manuals. "Maybe there will be a question like, 'What was the first scene in the 911 call?'" said Warren. "It allows them to learn more." War- ren said the museum board of di- rectors has also applied for a grant that would provide funding to build a replica of the first state po- lice troop. If funding is granted, it will be erected behind the muse- um. "We're also going to try to expand by putting the fuselage of a Bell helicopter in," he said. Many Delawareans will be cheered to find Trooper Dan's fi- nal resting spot is in a cheery cor- ner of the museum. Trooper Dan, a Volkswagen Beetle, played an active part in children's programs, primarily in the 1970s and 1980s. Trooper Dan was known to ac- company D.A.R.E. officers who taught countless numbers of Delaware fifth-graders how they could resist drug abuse. However, he never missed opportunities to attend other events; he was espe- cially fond of fairs. Other exhibits feature the histo- ry of state police uniforms, weapons and vehicles; the devel- opment of communication sys- tems; introduction and develop- ment of special units; and infor- mation about each of the troops.
