80 - CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, May I - May 7, 1998 Some bits and pieces from the track scene at the Penn Relays Forty thousand track and field Carrie Litke, Alexia Waples and fans enjoyed the Penn Relays last weekend, April 25-26, at historic Franklin Field in Philadelphia. No athlete enjoyed it more than Cape Henlopen High School senior Kai Maull who captured the long jump championship to highlight Delaware' s athletes. Maull went into the final seeded second and unleashed the longest jump of his short career with a dis- tance of 24 feet 9 inches. Maull then found himself posing next to Bill Cosby and being congratulat- ed by all the head officials of the relays.. Clemson University coaches and athletes watched their prize recruit and cheered Maull af- ter every jump. The distance broke the 23-10 state record; how- ever it was wind-aided which does not make it legal. The good news is that Maull jumped just over 24 feet on his fifth jump with wind in his face, which will count as the new Delaware record...Mike Roberts of Tower Hill broke Vince Glover's longtime triple jump record with a 48-10 distance and Roberts and Maull should meet for a great competition at the states...A stacked Olympic Devel- opment 400-meter relay Nike team and Gail Devers were beaten by the Adidas team with anchor Carlette Guidry. The Nike team, with World 100-meter champ Marion Jones on the second leg, had to turn and slow to stay in the zone, giving up valuable time...the same Marion Jones competed in the 4x200-meter race, but this time she stopped and took the stick 6 meters down with plenty of room to make up for the mistake. Jones ran 22.0 seconds to win by five meters and the crowd went crazy...how about the boys' high school mile relay and the Calabar, Jamacian third runner who lost his shoe at the handoff and still blazed a 47.3 around the oval...76-year- old Tim Murphy won the Master Tim Bamforth 1-888-MR ROOTER (667-6683) (302) 856-3700 UPI40 HAS MOVED to 24 Nassau Commons Rt. 9 Lewes (Follow signs to Nassau Valley Vineyard) Awning= Furniture Custom Boat Tops "The Canvas Man" 645-7492 RUNNING 100 dash in 14.4...American team Boys & Girls won the 3,200-meter relay in 7-minutes, 41-seconds as the crowd chanted "USA", but when they carried the U. S. flag for a victory lap what did the lead- off runner have? A small Jamaican flag...The man with the golden shoes, Michael Johnson, ran 19.8 on the anchor of the Nike 800-me- ter relay and then was surrounded by about 150 media maniacs...The Cape boys mile relay ran 3:45 and may be in jeopardy of not being invited back based on the Penn Relay 3:40 high school cutoff...The Cape girls ran 53.7 in the 400 relay and 4:18 in the mile relay... Cape splits with Teeh, falls to Dover The Vikings split with Sussex Tech on Monday with the girls winning 98-44 and the boys losing 94-52. Jessica Witherspoon won two events and anchored a win- ning relay as she ran 28.0 to win the 200-meter dash, jumped 33-4 to win the triple jump and helped the mile-relay team, including Meredith Marshall to victory in 4:45. Janelle Savage won the long and high jumps with 15-10 and 4- 10 performances, respectively, while Danielle Guerin won the 1,600 meter run in 6:02. Carrie Litke won the 100 hurdles in 18.8, while Alexia Waples won the 100 meter dash in 12.6. The Viking girls also captured the 3,200 relay in 11:33 and the 800 relay in a time of 1:58. On the boys side, Kai Maull re- turned from the Penn Relays to win four events and score 20 points on the day. Maull won the 100 dash in 11.0, the 200 dash in 22.8, the long jump in 21-8 and the 300 hurdles in 41.7. Maull learned to hurdle last summer and the Sussex Tech win was his first legal try at the event that he is experimenting with in hopes of adding it to his track r6- sum6. Former jumper Bruce Pitts took the same path in 1994 by breaking the school record and go- ing on to win the conference and state meet with a time of 38.2. Brian Kniepp won the 1,600 run in 4:50 and 800 run in 2:08, while Ricky Thompson jumped 6-0 to win the high jump. The Viking boys won only one of four relays as they captured the 3,200 relay in 9:00. On Wednesday, April 29, Cape traveled north to face a tough Dover squad as the Senators beat the Cape girls 87-50 and the Cape boys 92-51. Maull won the 300 hurdles in a personal record of 39.2, which is one of the top times in the state, while Ricky Thompson won the long jump in 21-5.
