Diamond State Barbecue Assn. plans cookoff May 9 The Diamond State-Barbecae Association will host the first an- nual Diamond State Barbecue Cookof  and Delaware State Championship to be held at the Delaware State Fairground in Harrington from May 9-11. The eookoff will feature four cate- gories: beef brisket, pork shoul- der, pork ribs, and chicken. Over $6,000 in prize money will be awarded. The scheduled times for the contest are Friday, May 9 from 5 to 11 p.m.; Saturday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.; and May I 1 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Professional cooking teams from as far away as Texas will travel to Delaware to compete in the event. Fourteen Kansas City Barbecue Association trained and sanc- tioned judges will preside. National championship barbe- cue will be available for purchase by the general public. As well, a People's Choice Award will be determined by the public via ballots handed out at the entrance. This is the first state-wide cookoff sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society. The overall winner will be invit- ed to attend the prestigious Kansas City Royal, a national bar- becue cookoff held in Kansas City, MO, in October and will be placed in the drawing to compete at the 'ultimate' barbecue cookoff competition, the Jack Daniels in Lynchberg, TN. The cookoff will be held in con- junction with Wild West Days. In addition to the cookoff, a country- western concert starring Dallas & Stillwater is planned. A crafts fair, the crowning of Miss Rodeo Delaware, carnival rides, an Indian powwow and three live rodeos are some other attractions during theevent. Entrance admission (good for all events exceptthe rodeo and concert), is $3. Tickets for the rodeo and con- cert may be purchased by calling Chick's Western Wear at (800) 444-2441. Food handlers' workshop set for Rehoboth May 5 Could the recent outbreak of Hepatitis A have happened in your home? In your food service operation? If humans handle food, the answer is yes. Learn how to prevent a Hepatitis A outbreak and how to control other problem microorganisms to prevent food borne illnesses. Contamination of food by mi- croorganisms and subsequent out- breaks of illness are preventable if food service personnel and others know how to handle food safely. Cooperative Extension, in cooper- ation with the state Division of Public Health, is offering a two and a half hour workshop on food safety on Monday, May 5 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Village lm- provement Association Club House in RehobothBeach. The cost for the seminar is $5 per person or $15 for three or more individuals from the same organization. The seminar will teach partici- pants to recognize sources of con- tamination and how to prevent it. Special handling techniques will be also be discussed The workshop is designed for restaurant and food service work- ers, temporary food-permit recipi- ents, day care and foster care providers and volunteers who pre- pare large amounts, of food for churches, fire halls or other public events-.
