58 - CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, May 2- May 8, 1997 Rehoboth Art League announces May ,:,lass schedule The Rehoboth Art League is blooming with classes in May. Folk-artist Joseph Santangelo will instruct students on the art of woodcarving on Tuesdays, May 6, 13 and 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Santangelo, who is self- taught, is known for his carvings of colorfully decorated birds. In Santangelo's class, students will learn the basics of carving while also nurturing the creative possibilities in the medium of wood. The first session will con- centrate on knife safety and sharp- ening, while chip carving of a two-dimensional design will be the subject of the second class. The last session will cover three- dimensional carving of an object such as a figure. The fee for the class is $45 for members and $55 for non-members. Catherine Winslow Priest will teach oil painting techniques de- rived from the Old Masters begin- ning Friday, May 2. This course explores the illusion of subject matter in space revealed through light using the chiaroscuro tech, nique. Still life and outdoor paint- ing are planned. The course will continue May 12, 19, June 2, 9, 16 and 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. and the cost is $90 for members and $100 for non-members. Learn more about photography in Theresa Airey's class, when she will discuss how to take better travel shots and how to incorpo- rate important elements like color and composition. This class will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, May 17 and is $40 for members and $50 for non-mem- bers. Marine watercolor painting is a course which covers the best sub- ject possible to paint while learn- ing how to put design principles, colors and value sketches to good use. Instructor Matthew M. Mack "White Swan" is the creation of folk.art woodcarver Joseph Santengelo who will be teaching a woodearving class at Re. hobeth Art League this month. The pieces will be glazed and have finishing touches added. The course meets May 24, 25 and June 7 from 10 a.m. to2 p.m., in the Pottery Studio and the cost is $70 for members and $80 for non-members.
