Kai Maull breaks his long jump record; Cape girls win00at Penn Relays What a great week to be a Cape Henlopen tack and field athlete, coach, parent, or just fan as the Vikings were highlighted this week by junior Kai Manll shatter- ing his own week-old school record in the long jump and the la- dy Vikings coming off an out- standing performance in the pres- tigious Penn Relays. Maull, coming off a school record jump of 23' 1" at the recent Cape Co-Ed Relays, won the long jump against Seaford on Tuesday with another record performance, landing 23'5" into the pit making him the only Cape Henlopen jumper to ever go over 23 feet. Just last week, Maull leaped a wind-aided 23' 1" to break Les Freeman's 25-year-old school record of 22' 10" and add his name to the top of a long list of great Cape long jumpers. "That jump felt good to me," said Maull. 'I knew it was a good one." Delaware has not had a long jumper over ' 23 feet in the '90s and Delawares state record holder is Randy Lam- bert of Mount Pleasant, from 1988, with a dis- tance of HAULL 23'10." Cape has had, however, several long jumpers over 22 feet in the '90s with Willie Savage, Bruce Pitts and Art Hugger leading the way. But reaching the 23- foot barrier, and doing it twice in the same week, is a whole different story in the world of long jumping. "Kai had a great series of jumps with distances of 22'8," the record 23'5," and 22'9," and the 23'5" jump was even behind the board," said Greg Weer who was the long jump official. "The jump of 23'5" could have easily been a 23'9" jump. He just gets so much height off the take-off board, it's impres- sive to watchhim jump." Maull will team up with Tavarous Nelson this Friday night, May 2 at the Dover Relays, hoping to unleash a big one before heading into the Conference and RUNNING Tim Bamforth State Championship meets that will be held at Polytech High School, equipped with Delaware's newest track and fast runways.
