+ Sussex GOP searches for a new chaff By Bridin Reynolds Hughes The resignation of county chair- man R. Keller Hopkins has left the Sussex County Republican Com- mittee to launch an off-election year candidate search for new leadership. Hopkins, who led much of the Sussex County Republican ticket to triumph in the November elec- tions, announced April 2.5 that he would vacate the chairmanship two years early following the Re- publican State Convention on May 17. A Sussex County native, Hop- kins is the president and CEO of Hopkins Construction, Inc. in Bridgeville, a heavy mechanical contractor that specializes in building large wastewater treat- ment plants and pumping stations. In response to the resignation and under the interim leadership of Vice Chair Phyllis Byme, the SCRC has formed a search com- mittee headed by Sen. Gary Simp- son, R-Milford, to identify a nom- inee to replace the departing chairman. "We have gathered a diverse group of Sussex Republicans who essentially represent all areas of the county. But, we would still like to hear from any registered Republican in the county who wishes to suggest a prospective chairman," said Simpson. Hopkins believes the strong Re- publican candidate showing and high voter turnout in the last elec- tion bode well for the chairman search. In November, Sussex Re- publicans capitalized on favorably redrawn elections districts and a rare open seat to take three tradi- tionally Democratic House seats. Pep. 3oe Booth, R-Georgetown, and Rep. Gerald Hocker, R-Oceun View, bested incumbents Rep. John Schroeder, D-Lewes, and Shirley Price, D-Millville, respec- tively, while Rep. John Atkins, R- Millsboro, gave the GOP its first ever win in the 41st district. Despite a simultaneous search for a Republican State Chairman created by the earlier resignation of Everett Moore, Byme agreed that the timing of replacing the county chair is not a concern for the SCRC but said the committee does regret losing Hopkins. In addition to Simpson and Byrne, the search committee is composed of Lauren Alberti of Bethany Beach, Tom Draper of Rehoboth Beach, Kia Evans of Milton, Cindy Green of Green- wood, the Rev. Leslie James of Seaford, Judge Bill Lee of Re- hoboth, George Parish of Long Neck, County Councilman Vance Phillips of Laurel and Mayor Dan Short of Seaford. Suggestions for the chairman- ship may be made by calling Sus- sex Republican Headquarters in Georgetown at 856-6323.
