120 - CAPE G - Friday, May 4 - Monday, May 7, 2007 Temptations, Miraclesamongacts headed to Rehoboth June 8-9 The board of Delaware Celebration of Jazz will present the Third Annual Rehoboth Beach Heritage Music Fest on Friday and Saturday, June 8-9. Events will be held at the Rehoboth Convention Center. Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson will open, Friday, June 8, for Irma Thomas, the "soul queen of New Orleans." Johnson served as a sideman for both Magic Sam and MuddY Waters, and remains one of the best living West Side bluesfolk, a charismatic man, powerful gui- tarist and soulful singer. He toured the world with Muddy Waters' band, and shared the stage with the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, The Allman Brothers and Johnny Winter. Since becoming a solo artist, he has also performed with Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jerry Garcia, and Bonnie Raitt. He even made a guest appearance in the Blues Brothers movie. Thomas is a contemporary of Aretha Franklin and Etta James, but never experienced their level of commercial success; still, she has a large cult following among soul aficionados. In 2007, she won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album for "After The Rain", her first Grammy in an acclaimed career spanning over 45 years. The convention center will host a night of Motown, Saturday, June 9, with performances by The Miracles with special guest Claudette Robinson opening for Richard Street and Th Temptations. The Miracles were the first Motown group to bring Berry Gordy's Detroit record company fame with its first gold record. The song, "Shop Around," sold a nail- lion copies in 1960. "Shop Around" was followed by hits such as "Who's Lovin' You" ("Shop Around's" b-side), "You Really Got a Hold on Me" (1962), "Mickey's Monkey" (1963), "Going To A Go-Go" (1965), "The Irma Thomas will perform Friday, June 8, in Rehoboth. Tracks Of My Tears" (1965), and their signature song, "Ooo Baby Baby" (1965). In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked The Miracles No. 32 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. The year 2007 marks the 50th anniversary of the Miracles. In 1972, frontman Smokey Robinson opted for a solo career and the Miracles' current lead singer is Mark Scott. The Miracles continued, scoring two more Top 40 hits: 1973's No. 13 hit "Do It Baby", and 1976's No. 1 hit "Love Machine (Part 1)", the biggest hit of the group's exis- tence. The name Richard Street is syn- onymous with the Motor City music scene, dipping way back in the day to Detroit doo-woppers The Distants. Formed in 1955, the group also included Otis Williams and Street's cousin Melvin Franklin, all of whom would even- tually sing in The Temptations. Come 1959, the hopeful formed The Monitors and was hired four years later by Berry Gordy as a quality control producer for Motown Records. As artists like The Miracles, The Supremes, The Jackson Five and Marvin Gaye sprung up, Street was right by their side and working with the move- ment first hand. He eventually entered the front lines himself when The Temptations underwent a line-up overhaul in the early 1970s, which started with the departures of David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks for solo careers, along with Paul Williams as he battled alcoholism. The arrival of Richard together with Dennis Edwards signaled a notable musical shift in direction and the next few years would find The Temptations tackling topics in the news - the Vietnam War and urban poverty - with songs such as "Take A Look Around", "Ball Of Confusion" and the landmark "Papa Was A Rolling Stone", which earned the group three Grammy Awards.
