Cape Gazette CAPE LIFE FRIDAY, MAY 13 - MONDAY, MAY 16, 2011 6S I 2011 Del The Kids Count in Delaware- Families Count in Delaware 2011 Fact Book was released May 9 at the Chase Center on the River- front in Wilmington. This issue represents the 16th year for the Kids Count-Families Count project to monitor the well-being of children and fami- lies in Delaware. Trend data within Delaware in the past year has remained steady or shown improvement in seven of 10 national indicators. While still well above the U.S. average, Delaware's percentage of low-birth-weight babies de- creased this year for the second time since the mid-1980s. Also, the infant mortality rate for Delaware dropped for a third year in a row. While the 2011 Fact Book uses data.to illustrate a number of en- couraging changes, it also high- lights areas of concern.. This year's Fact Book features a special-focus section on Chil- dren, Poverty, and America's Re- cession to examine how the lives of children and their families have been impacted by recent economic changes. Lasting effects of the recent re- cession increased the number of Delaware children living in poverty to a rate of 15.2 percent for the 2008-10 time period, an increase of 2.1 percent from the last reporting period (2007-09). Children are classified as living in poverty based on federal threshold figures which are up- dated annually. Other indicators which demonstrate an increased and ongoing need among Delaware children include alarge rise in utilization of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (57,294 households served to date in 2011) and the Free and Re- duced School Lunch Program (an-all time high of 47 percent of Senior center offers. fitness, fundraiser The Cape Henlopen Senior Center will hold Monday after- noon Zumba fitness classes from 3 to 4 p.m., starting May 9..
