In the heavy seas west of Bermuda, we yearned for the stable deck of Moon Glo The Moon Glo Restaurant sits up a ways from the turquoise wa- tered harbor of St. George's at the east end of the island of Bermuda. While sailors tied up at the pub- lic wharf about a block away spend fidgety hours waiting for breaks in the weather to continue their ocean journeys, dark- skinned Bermuda natives sit qui- etly in the Moon Glo. They're happy to be up on solid, high ground, close but secure from the wind-tossed ocean that surrounds their isolated home. Bermuda lies 600 miles off the east coast of the United States. West southwest of Cape Hatteras, it is separated from the nearest other solid ground by at least 575 miles of open Atlantic Ocean, in every direction The steps leading up to the Moon Glo, like the majority of Bermuda building material, are stone-like blocks carved from an- cient coral reefs. Those reefs emerged from the Atlantic sea bottom millennia ago to create Bermuda. In the soft tropical hours of Bermuda evening, reggae music flows from ajuke box in the Moon Glo. St. George's residents sip draft beers, play cards, and shoot pool in a room adjacent to where the dark-wooded bar stands. Framed pictures of colorfully uni- formed soccer and cricket teams line the wills above shelves filled with trophies chronicling the suc- cess of Bermuda sports teams sponsored by the Moon Glo. As with so much of the Bermuda cul- ture, the photos are a constant re- minder of the strong English in- fluence on this British protec- torate. Q 0 Q "What can I get you men?" The cook pushes her way out the swinging door of the Moon Glo kitchen to take our order. Wiping her hands on a dirty white apron, she nods and smiles as we tell her that talk on the streets of St. George's says the Moon (31o is famous for its fish sandwiches. Fish sandwiches with side or- ders of rice and peas. "You want three? she asks. BAREFOOTIN' Dennis Forney We're all smiles and yesses. She heads back for the kitchen and Rick heads for the bar. Rick Judge and J.B. Melson, Cape region residents, have their captains licenses and a company specializing in delivering yachts for owners. The company is named Judge and Judge. The name plays on J.B.'s duties as a Sussex County magistrate court judge. I joined the two of them in Bermuda on Wednesday, May 3 to help finish delivery of a 45 foot sloop, Second Chance, from Tor- tolla in the Caribbean's Virgin Is- lands to Stamford, Connecticut, just above New York City. Last fall when Judge and Judge, joined by John Hall, sailed Second Chance south from Newport, Rhode Island, the f'wst leg of the trip to Bermuda, on the strength of a strong southwest wind, took three and a half days. The Moon (31o fish sandwiches surpass their reputation. Each is made of several layers of thin, breaded filets of wahoo, a firm ocean fish, stacked tall between two slices of wheat bread. They are spiced with a yellow curry and mayonnaise spread. Combined with rice and peas and a pint of draft, the meal leaves us filled and optimistic. The next time we feel that satis- fied is six days later when we mo- tor across a glassy Atlantic under a full moon with less than a hun- tired miles to the mainland.
