CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, May 23 - May 29, 1997 - 17 Memorial Day observances set throughout Cape Region Memorial Day weekend each year ushers in the beginning of the summer season in Sussex County as thousands of summer res- idents make the holiday trek to the shore. But the upcoming holiday weekend is al- so a special time for Sussex County's many veterans organization who will gather in several solemn ceremonies on Sunday, May 25, and also on the traditionally established May 30 date to honor their fallen comrades. The following events have been planned: At Mason-Dixon VFW Post 7234 in Ocean View, the Memorial Day observance will take place on Friday, May 30, begin- ning at 11 a.m. on post grounds at the end of Cedar Neck Road. The ceremony will be opened by Bob Rosenberg, the American- ism Chairman. Following presentation of the colors by the Post Honor Guard, the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Officer of the Day Wilson Lowe, playing of the national anthem by Harry Henkel and the invocation by Post Chaplain Ross Roberts, senior vice commander elect Lou Kubicki will read General Order No. 11, which designates Memorial Day as a time to remember all veterans who have served their country. Brief comments by Post Commander George M. Ritchie and Auxiliary president Carol Fournier will be followed by a Memorial Day address by George H. Bunting, Jr., newly elected senator for the 20th district, and a Marine Corps veteran who served with distinction in Vietnam. The ceremony will conclude with the laying of wreaths, flags and floral tributes on the post memorial, a divine blessing by the Post Chaplain, a volley salute to departed com- rades by the Honor Guard and the sounding of "Taps" by bugler Dick Hires. Rehoboth Beach VFW Post 7447 will also hold its Memorial Day observance May 30 on the boardwalk bandstand, begin- ning at 11 a.m. Post commander Albert "Butch" Imperi- al, who also serves as VFW Department of Delaware chief of staff, will be the keynote speaker. This special day of remembrance ceremony will feature the Cape Henlopen High School band and Junior ROTC Honor Guard, and the representatives of veterans organizations including the American Le- gion, the Disabled American Vets (DAV), the Marine Corps League, the Retired Offi- cers Association, Pearl Harbor Survivors, Order of the Purple Heart and others. The public is invited. At Sussex Memorial VFW Post 7422 in Millsboro, several veterans organization, including the American Legion and the DAV will be on hand for a special Memori- al Day observance on Sunday, May 25 be- ginning at 2 p.m. at the post home on U.S. 113. Post commander Atwood Timmons has announced that Edwin T. Moran of Re- hoboth Beach, past commander of the De- partment of Delaware VFW, will be the guest speaker. The Post 7422 and District 4 Honor Guard will perform a 'graveside' service outside the post. After a volley salute and the sounding of "Taps," wreaths and floral decorations will be placed on the war memorial in front of the post home. Re- freshments will be served by the Ladies Auxiliary. The public is welcome. Rehoboth Beach Chapter and Unit 8 of Disabled American Veterans will hold a Memorial Day service at 9:30 a.m., Friday, May 30, at Henlopen Memorial Cemetery, off Rt. 1 north of Lewes.
