which took place from May 8-12.
Each group received a plaque for
their participation, and the jazz

Cape High students dish up calculus and physics project
By Rosanne Pack
Many of the materials are iden-
tical to ones used in elementary
school projects, colored construc-
tion paper, sticks of balsa wood,
craft glue and rulers, but the terms,
"consider the definition of the
parabola," "vertex lies on the x-
axis" and "TI-82 program and
downloading," dispel the notion
that students are working on
Father's Day cards.
The classes who are creating
parabolic dishes are actually Cape
Henlopen High School seniors
who study advanced placement
calculus with Mike Eisenhour and
advanced placement physics with
John Hilton. The projects under
construction this week are used to
test the properties of a parabolic
dish in generating an increase in
heat at the dish's focal point, and
in collecting sound waves at the
focal point. Temperature and
microphone sound probes are used
to collect and store data that can
be directly transmitted to a com-
puter and then printed out.
Eisenhour and Hilton adapted
their interdisciplinary AP project
from one created by high school
instructors in California. Eisen-
hour said that they plan to do more
