Miller, an art teacher in the Cape Henlopen School District, has spent a lot of her spare time over the past couple of decades at the seashell mecca of the world, Sanibel Island, Fla., and most of the 30 different types of shells she collected on her own there. The Sailor's Valentine is a tra- dition stemming from Barbados and the southern Caribbean is- lands, where women created intri- cate shell designs enclosed in ma- of wall space tailor made for dis- playing artwork and it would give the League exposure in downtown Rehoboth Beach. While at first the Derricksons were disappointed that their ef- forts to restore and renovate the original "Strand" building were undermined by the deteriorated condition of the structure, they are now very pleased with the final outcome. "We had a false start in trying to preserve the Strand. While it was unfortunate it couldn't be worked out, we feel we were able to create an unique year round retail complex which upscale clients who will con- tribute to the community," said Bob Derrickson.
