A rough beginning for Renegade replacemem By Andrew Keegan The owners of a new dance nightclub in Rehoboth knew it would be a challenge to transform the old Ames department store in- to a high energy destination - and they were fight. After Midnight, or simply A.M., had placed a full-page advertise- ment in Camp Rehoboth Letters indicating "a new late night danc- ing experience begins May 23." Customers arriving at the club that evening were treated to pulsating lights and gotta groove music - it just happened to be located in a tent in the parking lot. Despite working round-the- clock for three weeks, the club simply wasn't ready said Eric Teves, one of the club's owners. Teves and Rob Dick, both man- agers at Rehoboth's Blue Moon bar and restaurant, Steve Fallon of Shore Haus and Dan Contarino, an event promoter, are the collab- orators behind the revival of the Rehoboth dance scene. When the Renegade bar closed its doors earlier this year, a void was created in the gay dance scene. "We started thinking about what we could do back in Janu- ary," said Teves, "because if the area cannot provide entertainment for the younger crowd they'll stop coming. Face it, they're here on vacation and want to party-all night and hit the beach during the day." Teves said he inquired about the Ames building in January but was informed it was being torn down in April. When the demoli- tion did not occur, Teves again contacted the owners and was told there was a change of plans. The club has the space until the end of September. "Had we been in there earlier we would have been ready for Memorial Day but there are so many people who must sign off on the place," said Teves. The 48,000 square foot space is being scaled down to a 20,000 square foot space featuring sever- al bars, a lounge area and 1,400 square foot dance floor. Seven fire exit doors are being installed be- cause the space useage has changed from retail to assembly. "With what happened in Rhode Is- land [a club fire killed 99 patrons] we want to do everything fight," said Teves. "We just wish it would go a little faster. The delay has re- ally placed a damper on the proj- COt." The club was unable to secure a liquor license in time for the Memorial Day weekend and CAMP Rehoboth agreed to use its nonprofit status to aquire a two- day gathering permit, according to CAMP Executive Director Steve Elkins, who said it is not unusual for a nonprofit to assist a private business. "It's clone all over the state," he said, "and we'll receive a percentage of the bar proceeds, probably around $500." Alcohol Beverage Control Commisioner John H.
