caw  ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT FRIDAY, MAY 30- MONDAY, JUNE 2, 2008 109 Acclaimed Mexican Film to be shown June 11 at Movies at Midway The Rehoboth Beach Film So- :ciety and the Lewes Public Li- brary co-sponsor a monthly film series titled Around the World which features critically ac- claimed, award-winning, interna- tional, independent films. The film series takes place at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month, in the upstairs screening room at the Movies at Midway. The next session takes place on June 11 and will feature a screening of "The Violin." Don Plutarco, his son Genaro and his grandson Lucio live a double life. They are musicians and humble farmers, but they al- so support the campesina peas- ant guerilla movement's armed efforts against the oppressive government. When the military seizes the village, the rebels flee to the sier- ra hills, and are forced to leave behind their stock of ammuni- tion. While the guerillas organize a counter-attack, old Plutarco exe- cutes his own plan. He plays up his appearance as a harmless vio- lin player, in order to get into the village and recover the ammuni- tion hidden in his cornfield. His violin playing charms the army captain, who orders Plutarco to come back daffy. Arms and mu- sic play a tenuous game of cat- and-mouse which ultimately re- suits in painful betrayaL "The Violin" is the most inter- nationally awarded Mexican film in history, and is the winner of three Ariel awards, the Mexican equivalent of an Oscar.
