24 - CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, June 2 - June 8, 1995 Front & Center Marriage Licenses Births Navy Chief Quartermaster John "Flip" Lafferty, son of Grace Laf- ferty of Lewes and the late Mervyn "Buzz" Lafferty, is cur- rently serving aboard the Swamp Fox TWR 821 - a torpedo weapon retriever vessel that operates off Cape Cod in the Navy's Boston operations area and off of Long Island, N.Y. Lafferty, along with 17 other crew members, are responsible for retrieving spent torpedoes. Sub- marines provide the crew with co- ordinates as to where the spent torpedoes will be, a rubber raft is launched with two sailors and the torpedo is secured with a line and then winched aboard the Swamp Fox. "In heavy seas," said Lafferty, the assistant craftmaster, "heli- copters are given the task of snar- ing the torpedoes." The spent torpedoes are then taken to port, usually Newport, R.I., where they are off-loaded and taken by truck to a weapons compound where they are ana- lyzed for their performance. O0 0 0 Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Raymond Abernathy, son of Raymond Abernathy of Milton, , recently returned to Norfolk, Va. after completing a six month over- seas deployment aboard the guid- ed missile cruiser USS Cape St. George, which included duty in the Adriatic Sea off the coast near Bosnia-Herzegovina. Abernathy was one of 400 sailors who completed the 31,000 mile voyage as part of the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Battle Chief Quarternmster John "Flip" Lafferty, a native of Lewes, is currently serving aboard a Navy torpedo re- trieval vessel Group. A 1970 graduate of Cape Hen- lopen High School, Abernathy joined the Navy in April 1983. 0 0 0 0 Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Tyrone Bailey, son of Lillie A. Collins of Milton, recently re- turned from a six month overseas deployment with Commander, Amphibious Squadron Five aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Essex, which included duty in the Persian Gulf and with-. drawing United Nations peace- keepers from Somalia. Bailey served on the staff of the officer in charge of the operations of the three-ship USS Essex Amphibi- ous Ready Group. A 1989 graduate of Western Harriet High School in Lillington, N.C., Bailey joined the Navy in January 1990. WE'RE IN BLOOMI.
