Record field of 182 runners turns out for Lions Club 5K
A record crowd of 182 runners
turned out for the annual
Delaware Lions Club Memorial
Day 5K run held last weekend in
Rehoboth Beach. The previous
best turnout for Memorial Day
weekend was 168 participants in
1992.
"We had a great turnout today,"
said Race Director Bruce
Springer. "We are now up by
over 200 participants in our first
three races when compared to last
year. Every wk we are attract-
ing new people from all parts of
the east coast. The series is really
beginning to grow thanks to the
efforts of a lot of volunteers and,
of course, Doe Masser."
Capturing the overall champi-
onship was Eric Albright of
Lewes in a time of 15:54.4, while
Lauri Oas won the women's
championship in a time of
18:27.2. Albright remained in a
pack of four consisting O f young-
ster Donovan Anderson of Caesar
Rodney High School, Leslie
Wright of North Carolina, and
Mike Snell winner Joe Waldron
through the opening half of the

race. From two miles on it was all
Albright, who has broken 15:00 in
a track 5000m, as he cruised to an
easy victory.
Anderson, much improved from
last season, took second in 16:17,
while Waldron was third in 16:40.
Wright, winner of a handful of
races last season, was fourth in
17:02. Greg Langer rounded out
the top five in a time of 17:09.
Women's champion Oas broke
away early and ran a good early
season race at just under six
minute pace per mile. Kim Kruse
took second in 20:05, while Sandy
Cross was third in 20:35. Joanne
Digregorio was fourth in a time of
20:58, while Michelle Kurtzman
rounded out the top five in 21:03.
Brent Ayer was crowned male
master champion by taking sev-
enth in a time of 17:31, while
Patrice Wolff won the women
masters in 22:25.

Rehoboth's County Bank will play host to the Girl Scout 5K run
that will be held this Sunday morning, June 4, at the Grove Park in
Rehoboth Beach beginning at 8:30 a.m. Pre-registration will be
from 7:30-8:20 a.m. at Grove Park.
"We are hoping for a good turnout for the Girl Scouts," said
Dave Gillan of County Bank.
The Girl Scouts from Troop 172 are busy raising money for a
trip to DisneyWorld this summer, and proceeds from the race will
benefit several under-privileged girls.
The pre-registration fee is $10; $12 per person the day of the
race. For more inforamtion, call 684-1512.
Participants will receive long sleeve T-shirts as an upgrade from
the normal summer short sleeve T-shirts.
The TAC certified course is shaded and fast finishes in beautiful
Grove Park.
