L.L. Bean opens first store outside New England
By Kerry Kester
Rehoboth Beach can now boast that it has the only
L.L Bean factory store outside of New England. On
Friday, May 26, it opened the doors of its 16,500
square foot store after a brief ribbon cutting ceremo-
ny. The shop located in the Rehoboth Beach Outlet
Center on Del. 1 is Bean's sixth factory store. The
other five are located in New Hampshire and Maine.
"L.L Bean is a store that sells for the outdoors, so
our products embody that mood," said Danna Ham-
mond, manager. The company sells apparel, outdoor
sporting goods and home furnishings.
"We'll be selling some discontinued products
here," said Hammond, "so they're reduced substan-
tially - anywhere from 20 to 70 percent." In addition
to the discontinued goods, Hammond said, Bean will
also sell some first and second quality products.
Vice President of Retail for L.L. Bean Bill Sbea
said, "We also have some products here that we don't
have at any of the other stores." For example, he
said, the store is carrying a custom T-shirt embla-
zoned with an L.L. Bean hiking boot logo.
Shoppers were anxious to cross the store's thresh-
old on its opening day. Robert and Edith Delacy,
who spend summers in the Cape region, spent the
morning at the store looking for specific items
they've been buying from L.L. Bean catalogues for
years. "We've always bought a lot from the cata-
logue. We've always had good service out of their
clothes," said Edith. "If anything ever went wrong,
they replaced it."
Shea said that good catalogue sales from this part
of the coastal region was one reason Bean selected
Rehoboth Beach for its first venture out of New Eng-
land. "A lot of our mail order customers vacation
here," he said. L.L. Bean will be open Mondays
through Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. It will al-
so be open on Sundays from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
