130 - CAPE GAZETYE, Friday, June 4 - June 10, 2004 Cape Higll golfers place fifth in state tournament The Cape Henlopen High School golf team finished its 2004 + season in fine form, with a fifth-: place" team finish in the state championship held June 1-2 at: Sussex Pines Country Club near Georgetown. Junior John Purple led his fel- low Vikings with a 75-74 two-day score of 149, good for third place individual honors based on a match of cards. Jason Hastings and Brett Hertel tied for next best among t.he Viking squad. Hastings shot an 83 the first day and an 84 on the sec- ond day. Hertel shot the same scores, but in reverse order. Andrew Lee completed the team scoring with a 91 in the first round and a 93 in his second and final round as a high school golfer. Purple had a nice perspective on GOLF Fritz Schranck his accomplishment. "Tied for third is good," he grinned. "I was just glad I didn't have a double- bogey i n either round, or in the conference tournament last week. The winners with a score of 113 were (l-r) Trish Medd, Iris Mensh, Barbara Rider and Joan Crowley (not picturedL Second place went to Sarah Fabrizio, Barbara Morgan, Joan Palmer and Lynn Webster with 114. Helen Porter, Phyl Mitchell, Jackie Travis and Ann Orr placed third with 117. Adelaide Schultze, Jean Van Pelt, Suzanne Moore and Mary Anne McGovern were fourth with 120. In special events, closest to the pin honor was won by Ca- role Ann Isenberg, while winners in longest drive in flights included: A - Daisey Hudson; B - Trish Medd; C - Jeanette Travis; and D - Peggy Martin.
