18 - CAPE GAZETYE, Friday, June 7- June 13, 1996 The heart ofa young girl recalls Designer Showhouse Merrywood By Kerry Kester Designer Showhouse had an un- expected guest on Friday, May 31, when Kathleen Baylis Rooney, 84, revisited the home of her childhood - Merrywood. Rooney is the daughter of John Baylis, who commissioned the home's erection in 1911. Rooney lived in the Lewes home, now featured as the 1996 Designer Showhouse, until she left home for college. Fond memories flooded Rooney as she walked through the home, remembering the events and fa- milial customs that defined her youth. Some things remained the same, she noted, and some parts of the house were very different. "I'm really impressed that it's been kept as nice as it is," said Rooney. She admired the claw foot bathtub in the upstairs bath- room - a room with unique fea- tures in the days of her childhood, she said. Most people, she ex- plained, did not having running water in their homes. Her father, however, had somehow rigged a generator pump in the basement that allowed for running water in the bathroom. Another unusual feature of the home, she said, was that her father had managed to provide gas heat for the residence, when most other homes were heated by kerosene or coal. "We had gas, not kerosene," she said, and that gave her more leisure time than some of her playmates. "My friends around Continued on page 20 Outdoor sculpture enhances Showhouse Lovers of outdoor sculpture will delight in the exterior garden area of Merrywood, 817 Savannah Road in Lewes, which features the sculpture work of three of the mid-Atlantic region's most noted artists. Merrywood is an evocative new Federal style farmhouse built in 1911 by John Baylis and is cur- rently owned by Dennis and Becky Forney. Libby Zando of Zando Designs has curated a "Collector's Garden", featuring the artistic sculpture works of Gary Hughes, Bethesda, Md.; Grant Massey, Frankford; and Wes Stack, Milton. Hughes' sculptures are in many private and public collections in- ternationally, including the Re- hoboth Art League. He is show- ing "Highwheeler", a bronze work portraying a whimsical bicyclist, at Merrywood. Massey's sculptures and mixed media works are also found in in- ternational collections. He is es- pecially noted for his sculptures and lamps portraying fish and ani- mals. At the Designer Showhouse exhibition, he is displaying a "Salmon Luma" light and enchanti- ng sculptures of "Tuna Lite and Mullet Steak." Stack, a noted local educator, spe- HUGHES SC cializes in stone, wood and metal and is in- spired by ancient mythology and history. His work never fails to delight and enchant the viewers.
