34 - CAPE GAZETYE, Friday, June 7 - June 13, 1996 Cancer Watch ACR awards $2.2 million in new research grants Carl eating hot chili peppers raise your risk of stomach cancer? How low fat must a diet be to affect the occurrence of skin can- cer? Can a substance found in cherries and citrus fruits be used to prevent pancreatic cancer? Those are but three of the 16 innovative new research questions recently funded by the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) 1996 Investigator Initiat- ed Grant Program, which bestowed $2.2 million in research grants. This program, open to researchers at a not-for-profit uni- versity, hospital or research cen- ter, supports cutting-edge research in the area of diet, nutri- tion and cancer. In 1996, there will be an esti- mated 1,359,150 new cancer cas- es diagnosed and an estimated 554,740 lives lost in the United States to cancer, our nation's sec- ond leading cause of death. Sci- entists have estimated that 40 to 60 percent of all cancers are linked directly to our dietary choices. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) estimates that 35 percent of all cancer deaths are linked directly to our dietary choices. The relationship between diet and cancer has become a subject of increasing interest for researchers in recent years as sci- entists have found not only links between the foods we eat and some types of cancer, but increas- ing evidence that some nutrients may offer protection against can- cer. For instance, research studies indicate that a low-fat diet rich in fruits, vegetables and grains plays a significant role in reducing can- cer risk, including risk for breast cancer. One of the newly-funded AICR studies aims to clarify the rela- tionship between fat and cancer. Dr. Judith Christman of the Uni- versity of Nebraska Medical Cen- ter will try to determine how large a reduction of fat and calories in an individual's daily diet is suffi- cient to decrease breast cancer risk and the ways in whiehthis decreased risk occurs. The AICR is the only major cancer charity focusing exclusive- ly on the link between diet, nutri- tion and cancer. AICR has award- ed more than $37 million in fund- ing for research in diet, nutrition and cancer, making 392 cancer research projects possible in 40 states and six countries. Previous AICR grantees and other leading researchers are among those scheduled to speak at the 1996 AICR Annual Research Conference, "Dietary Fat and Cancer: Genetic and Molecular Interactions," August 29 and 30 in Washington, D.C. For a free con- ference brochure and registration information, call AICR at (800) 843-8114.
