Electric Co-op breaks ground for new HQ
Delaware Electric Cooperative
(DEC) broke ground on Wednes-
day, May 15 for a new headquar-
:rs at its property on Rt. 13 south
,ff Greenwood. The building is
,xpected to be completed and
ready for occupancy in the fall of
997.
The building will feature a
much-needed drive-in payment

"The great story is that this pro-
j:ct will not affect our consumers'
rates," said DEC General Manag-
:r Paul Bienvenue. 'The existing
facility is extremely inefficient
operationally with increasing
maintenance costs and inadequate
conditions for both consumers and
employees. As our service area
continues to experience signifi-
cant growth, we are committed to
meeting the needs of tomorrow's
rural southern Delaware."
French and Ryan Inc. designed
the new headquarters and Ban-
croft Construction Company will
oversee the construction. The Co-
op will remodel its service and
warehouse facility and eventually
construct a new structure where
the present front office is located
on RL 13.
The last remodeling effort at
DEC took place in 1961 when the
Co-op had about 12,000 cus-

tomers. Today, Delaware Electric
Cooperative serves 52,000 cus-
tomers in rural Kent and Sussex
Counties.
Incorporated in 1936 and cur-
rently celebrating its 60th year of
operation, the Co-op built a new
structure in 1941 and still operates
out of part of that original facility.
Delaware Electric Cooperative
first energized its lines in 1938
when it had 223 customers, 94
miles of line, and one substation.
Currently the company's 120 em-

The company's mission has re-

"to enrich the life of the commu-
