CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, June 7 - June 13, 1996 - 63 Blue-Gold ,3oi :( lassic slated for Kings Creek Club The Second Annual Blue-Gold Golf Classic will come to King's Creek Country Club on Thursday, June 20 to benefit the Delaware Foundation for Retarded Chil- dren. Similar tournaments will be played in Kent and New Castle counties the same week. More than 370 golfers statewide are expected to participate in the three county tournaments. Since the first tournament in 1988, more than $150,000 has been raised for the Delaware Foundation for Re- tarded Children. The Delaware Foundation for Retarded Children serves children with mental disabilities through- out the state and provides funds to schools and other service agencies for purchasing equipment and oth- er supportive services for children with special needs. In 1994, the Children's Beach House, Easter Seal Society of Del-mar and Kent- Sussex Industries have received grants. Perhaps the best known of the foundation's activities is the annu- al Blue-Gold football game, fea- turing high school football players from Delaware, scheduled for Sat- urday, June 29. In addition to benefiting the foundation, the Blue-Gold high school program provides an opportunity for chil- dren with disabilities to become Cape Board appoints coaches The Cape Henlopen Board of Education re-appointed Ron Kahn to the Lewes Middle School girl's basketball head coach during its May 16 meeting. The board also appointed Joan Jefferson as the soccer cheerleading coach at Cape Henlopen High School and Steven Kaminski as the assistant football coach at Lewes Middle School during its May 23 meeting. YMCA sets Dewey Beach sprint triathlon The Dewey Beach Sprint Triathlon will be held on Satur- day, September 14, at 8 a.m. Pro- ceeds from the benefit will go to the Sussex County YMCA. JA Reedy Point Bridge Challenge set June 8 Junior Achievement of Delaware, Inc. is planning the '1996 Reedy Point Bridge Chal- lenge for Saturday, June 8. The bridge on Rt. 9 will be closed to traffic from 8:30 a.m. to noon for a 5K and 10K walk/run and a chil- dren's fun run. The public is also invited to climb the bridge for pictures and exercise. "buddies" with local high school athletes. Co-chairmen for the Sussex tournament are Dan Tidwell of Merrill Lynch and Ed Cranston of the Wilmington Trust Company. Committee members include Craig Karsnitz, Larry Sharp, War- ren Hardy and Terry Smith. Registration for the Blue-Gold Golf Classic begins at 11:30 p.m. on June 20, and the cost is $125 per entrant. The fee includes the tournament lunch, awards, and a barbecue a the conclusion. This year Grotto Pizza will be serving a complimentary lunch to all golfers. Hole sponsorships are $200 and $500 to become a spon- sor in all three county tourna- ments.
