State hires
folklorist to
document
Hispanic
culture here
The Delaware Folldife Program
(DFP) of the Delaware Division
of Parks and Recreation has initi-
ated a Hispanic Cultural Tradi-
tions Survey to document the cul-
tural commu-
nities and tra-
ditional arts
of Hispanics
living in Kent
and Sussex
counties.
Funded
through a
grant from
the Celebra-
tion of Cul- PAYNE
tures Program
of the Delaware Division of the
Arts, this survey has two principle
goals. The primary goal is to iden-
tify the individuals and groups
practicing traditional arts associat-
ed with their homeland such as
music, dance, storytelling, foods
and crafts. The survey will also
explore the continuation of com-
munal traditions tied to saints'
feasts and other religious cere-
monies, seasonal celebrations and
popular arts. A second goal of the
survey will be to work with local
organizations, social service orga-
nizations, and community leaders
to assess how they are or could be
working to support individual
artists and community based cul-
tural activities. The DFP recently
hired folklorist Jessica Payne to
conduct the survey in the early

part of this summer. Payne will
work closely with community
leaders to identify artists and will
document their work through in-
terviews and photographs.
In addition to compiling these
materials, she will make recom-
mendations to the DFP regarding
how to better serve the Hispanic
constituencies of southern
Delaware and to build upon and
enhance the significant programs
already in place through local
agencies. Payne is a cultural con-
sultant who has worked for vari-
ous cultural agencies in Maryland,
New York, and New England.
If you, or someone you know, is
