Hurricane House Watch blows into Cape Region By Rosanne Pack If the name is an indication of the force of service, Hurricane House Watch might blow up a storm of new business for Len Leshem. Retired but not retiring, Leshem recently relocated to the Cape Region where he thinks he sees a need that he can fill. After retiring from General Motors, he first filled his leisure years with a pet sitting business that grew into house security, mail and newspa- per collection and a mountain of administrative work. He decided to leave that all be- hind, along with New Castle County, when he moved to the Lewes area and redirected his re- tirement energy. Now, with Hurri, cane House Watch, he hopes to provide a service to property owners who are not year-round residents while still keeping some of his activities options open. Included in jobs that House Watch can perform are checking properties during weather emer- gencies, preparing a house for seasonal opening and contacting contractors for home repairs. "I thought this was a need," he said. "But it would not be as re- strictive as the pet sitting busi- ness. "I live in the area and can tend to a lot of things that will save property own- ers a trip to the beach un- til they are I.,ESIIEM ready to move in for the season." Those who enlist Leshem's services can have the assurance of periodic property checks and house opening and preparation before owners or renters arrive. Repairs and service work that re- quires plumbers, electricians and even landscapers can be handled long-distance, once Leshem knows what is required and the appropriate contractors to contact and let into the home. When it's time for the first opening of the season, or even that mid-winter get-away, Hurri- cane House Watch can open win- dows, turn on the air conditioning (or the heat pump), place the patio furniture and see to it that the grass is cut and the hedges trimmed.
