CAPE GAZETUE, Friday, June 13 - June 19, 2003 - 5 Erik Sumptlon photo Celebrating Phase I of Streetscape The new Rehoboth Beach Convention Center freestanding sign erected as part of Phase I of the Rehoboth Avenue Streetscape Improvement Project hasn't met with complete approval by residents, businesses and city officials. The new sign is equipped with an LED, or lighted electronic device that has the capability of posting flashing, rolling announce- ments that are controlled by city employees from within City Hall. "A lot of residents and businesses have called Main Street and tell us they think the flashing rolling messages are out of character with the rest of the project," said Executive Director Fay Jaeobs of the $62,000 sign. Noting the city staff has yet to be formally trained in operating the lighted dis- play, Jacohs said: "We'd prefer something less flashy and just have the message remain static for a while before changing it." She also said there are other shades of red they can choose from that are moretoned down than the shade they are currently using. "We are sensitive to the fact that the sign is a bit more high tech than what Main Street and the streetscape aesthetics committee wanted and we want to minimize that while still giving the public messages regarding events, elections or storm warnings," she explained. Also, while they are pleased with the height of the sign, this isn't the case with the shade of blue of the sign. Mayor Sam Cooper said any modifications to the sign would be up to the Rehoboth Beach Board of Commissioners. "If it was up to me we would a chosen a sign that was a bit different. I liked some earlier proposals that I saw, but the pizzazz of the new one really doesn't bother me," he said. "During the planning I had to deal with the big picture and leave such decisions as the sign up to other people." The City of Rehoboth Beach also hosted a dinner celebrat- ing the completion of Phase I of the Rehoboth Avenue Streetscape Improve- ment Project Tuesday evening, June 10, in the Convention Center to fete all those who played a role in the ambitious undertaking between Fifth and Second streets. City and state officials, engineers from JMT, as well as the crew from Daisy Construction feasted on a hardy catered dinner. As they came in the door, City Manager Greg Ferreseg- reeted everyone with bags of Dolle's caramel popcorn and salt water taffy.
