34- CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, June 13- June 19, 2003 Environmental award winners span the state Delaware's water and wastewater opera- tors were the focus of attention at the Oper- ator of the Year awards ceremony, May 8, at Delaware Technical & Community Col- lege, Owens campus. Gordon Serman of Millsboro, an employ- ee of Mountaire Farms, was honored with the 2002 Wastewater Operator of the Year award. Receiving the 2002 Water Operator of the Year award was Frankford resident Clarence Quillen, who works for Tidewater Utilities. In addition, Environmental Lifetime Achievement awards were presented to four individuals who have demonstrated "sustained meritorious achievement in pro- viding significant contributions to Delaware's environment." The honorees in this category were Tony Gersitz of Milford, Debbie Hubbard of Seaford, Joe Mul- rooney of Wilmington and Heather Sheri- dan of Bethany Beach. The statewide Operator of the Year awards ceremony serves to highlight the role of Delaware's water and wastewater operators in protecting the environment. Award winners are chosen for their "out- standing technical excellence and exempla- ry work ethic contributing to the high level of water quality in Delaware." The awards ceremony is held each year at the Environ- mental Training Center on the Owens cam- pus, which provides a state-of-the-art site for hands-on training of operators from all over Delaware and surrounding states. The center has achieved international recogni- tion for the excellence of its training pro- grams. Also receiving certificates of recognition during the event were representatives of the Seaford and Bridgeville wastewater treat- ment facilities. These plants were nominated for the prestigious Operation & Maintenance Awards sponsored annually by the U.S. En- vironmental Protection Agency. Cosponsors for the awards ceremony were the Delaware Rural Water Associa- tion, the Department of Health & Social Services, the Department of Natural Re- sources and Environmental Control, the Eastern Shore chapter of the Water and Wastewater Operators Association, and Delaware Tech.
