90 - CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, June 13 - June 19, 2003 Rehoboth Art League to celebrate 65th anniversary June 19 tory of the Art League," Gilmore said. "Like most American art colonies, the artists of Rehoboth Beach wished to demonstrate their collegiality and camaraderie and it is in this spirit that they have signed the Doors over the past 65 years. This tradition of signing the doors began on Dedi- cation Day for the Art League on June 18, 1938, and more than 285 people have signed up until now. It is fortunate these doors exist because they weave together an important aspect of the Delmarva Peninsula's 20th century history. "It's been a giant puzzle piecing togethe r all the signers' identifies and my research has led me in many interesting directions. For example, I have discovered the j identities of signers as far away as an island in Maine and in western North Carolina. What is remark- able is that the signers of the Doors of Fame represent not only the history of the RAL, but repre- sent a part of the cultural history of the entire state and Mid-At- lantic area." A delightful aspect of the Doors of Fame are the symbols with deserted island. Because of the locale as a beach resort, many of the symbols take on nau- tical themes, but many others rep- resent the style or associations of the artist, the jurisdiction of the politicians, the music associated with a Pulitzer Prize winner, the tools of the foreman of Henlopen Acres etc. Gilmore lives in Alexandria, Va. and collects art by American women artists from the period 1850-1950.
