Cape Gazette CAPE LIFE FRIDAY, JUNE 19- MONDAY, JUNE 22, 2009 (rkq Cabinetmakers to be featured at All Saints' show Like most regions in the Amer- ican Colonies, Delaware had its own cabinetmakers. Today, sev- eral museums in the state display examples of furniture produced in Delaware and occasionally new pieces surface at antique shows. Gary Manlove, owner of Manlove's Choice Antiques, has spent time in local museums studying Delaware cabinetmak- ers and even had the benefit of seeing a piece by a cabinetmaker named James McDowell disas- sembled. "I've worked on a couple of McDowell's pieces, and put one back together," Manlove said. "The opportunity provided real insight into how he worked. That insight can help in identifying other pieces. You also can tell a McDoweU piece by its style. He incorporated sheared corners, line inlay and often French-style feet." James McDoweU established his business in Duck Creek (now Smyrna) in 1785. He died in 1838. One example is a sideboard signed by McDoweU fkrst on dis- play at the Wilmington Society of Fine Arts, now the Delaware Continued on page 68 GARY MANLOVE, OWNER OF MANLOVE'S CHOICE Antiques, will be one of the dealers displaying at the All Saints' An- tiques Show set for Wednesday, July 29 to Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center. At left, a Queen Anne period slant-lid desk that has been in Manlove's family since it was made around 1742 is composed of red gum as a primary wood and yellow pine secondary. It is a modest piece without many bells and whistles but is very pleasing to the eye and is on- ly 33 inches wide. Below left, this yellow pine blanket box was made in Mano!ove's hometown by a cabinetmaker/undertaker bythe name of White. It has evidence of old blue paint that had been taken off before he bought it. SUBMITTED PHOTOS Let me tell you about my best friend.. She's always on guard. She has my back - and my heart.
