Cape Gazette Arts & Entertainment FRIDAY, .NNE 19 - MONDAY, JUNE 22, 2009 87 " [ Lewes gardens in full bloom for tour June 20 Chamber of commerce is sponsor of 19th annual event The 19th Annual Lewes Gar- den Tour will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, June 20, with self-guided tours of eight private gardens in the historic seaport town of Lewes. Activi- ties include a garden market with vendors specializing in gar- den-related retail items, free lec- tures on gardening-related top- ics, musical entertainment and a food tent. The gardens visitors will see are places where plants are tend- ed with love and care. They are places where family and friends gather to enjoy each other's com- pany, where individuals retreat for inner reflection, and they are galleries for art and artifacts that carry on cherished memories. For the wildlife whose presence everyone enjoys, the gardens are a place of nourishment and refuge. And for those who love working with plants, gardens are a place to fully enjoy oneself while mundane day-to-day wor- ries fade away for a while. Most of this year's gardens have been in place for a period of time and vividly demonstrate how all gardens evolve and change over the years. As true gardeners never feel that their work is complete, there is always something fresh and in- teresting to inspire visitors to look at their own gardens with new eyes. Though all of the gar- dens are in Lewes, they repre- sent a variety of microclimates. Near the bay, wind, slt air and flooding create challenges. More sheltered gardens farther inland must consider shade in plant selection. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce, 120 Kings High- way in the Fisher-Martin House. Advance tickets are $15; tickets cost $20 on the day of the tour. To order in advance, call the chamber weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and reserve tickets us- ing VISA or Master Card. Tick- ets can be picked up at the cham- ber office after 9 a.m. on the day of the tour or in advance during chamber hours. For details call 645- 8073 or 877-465-3937, email inquiry@leweschamber.com or visit leweschamber.com. LEWES GARDENS will open their gates on Saturday, June 20, for the city's annual garden tour.
