Order of Eastern Star distributes funds to needy The Grand Chapter of Delaware, Order of the Eastern Star, an organization dedicated to assisting others, and in particular handicapped children in the state, held their annual meeting in Dover. During this meeting, funds raised from the group's 1996 Surrimer Benefit were allocated to several organizations in Delaware who serve to make life better for children with special needs. Orga- nizations receiving funds: John G. Leach School, New Castle, received $1,100 to pur- chase a battery powered word processor that provides text entry and editing for students who do not have the speed or dexterity needed to use ordinary writing components. Sussex Elementary Consor- tium, Lewes, was allocated $2,400 to purchase playground equip- ment for the seriously handi- capped ambulatory students. Easter Seal Society of Del- Mar, Inc., was given $1,200 to purchase playground equipment for Fairlee Manor Recreation and Education Center, Middletown. Children's Beach House, Inc., Lewes, was given $2,000 toward the En,iironmental Education Pro- gram especially for disabled un- derprivileged children. New Castle Middle School Li- brary received $1,000 for the pur- chase of audio books for visually impaired children. Child Development Watch, Milford, was given $1,000 to up- date computers and purchase soft- ware to convert English into Spanish and Spanish into English. Delaware Association for the Blind was, given $1,200 for three camperships to Camp Sunny- brook. Kent County Community School, Dover, $2,000 to purchase a, an au'gmentative communication device for the use of non-verbal students or those with limited intelligible speech. Shriner's Hospitals and Burns Institute, $4,000. NUR Temple, $1,000 for the transportation of children to the hospitals: Tall Cedars of Lebanon was allocated $2,000 for Multiple Sclerosis research. Delaware Consistory was giv- en $1,000 for schizophrenia re- search and learni_ng center for dis- abilities. A therapy cycle and a growing wheelchair Were presented to a four-year old boy born with spina bifida. The gifts totaled $21,636. These funds were generated at the Grand" Chapter of Delaware, Order of the Easter Star 1996 Summer Benefit. The 1997 Sum- mer Benefit will be held on June 28, also at NUR Temple. During the day, there will be a flea mar- ket, rummage sale, breakfagt, lunchand a chicken dinner, and crafts, produce.oand baked goods will be for sale.
