Lewes Beach waterfront headed toward dramatic change
This aerial photograph shows the public beach at Lewes, Savannah Road
to the left, Cape Henlopen Drive running from left to right and Virginia Av-
enue running through the open space from Cape Henlopen Drive to the
public beach parking lot. Other notable features of this photo include the
Ocean House condominium, top left; the infamous DeBraak shell, to the
right of the Ocean House; the red-roofed Lewes public bath house; and
Kupchick's Restaurant nestled between. The Lewes Dairy Queen is shown

at the corner of Savannah Road and Cape Henlopen Drive. A partnership
has proposed razing the DeBraak shell and replacing it with a 57-unit Vic-
torian-style motel. That project still must receive Lewes Board of Adjust-
ment approval for some zoning variances including height. Meanwhile, an
informal committee working with an owner of a substantial portion of the
vacant block of land in the center of this photo, on a mixed use residential-
commercial project, is on hold until the DeBraak shell plans are final.
