CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, June 26 . July 2, 1998 - 31 Jodi Sykes to wed John Messick Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Sykes of Lincoln have announced the en- gagement of their daughter Jodi Lynne Sykes to John Edwin Mes- sick Jr. He is the son of Sally Messick and the late John Edwin Messick, "Esq., of Georgetown. The bride-to-be is a 1993 gradu- ate of Milford High School and recently received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Wesley College. She is currently working on a master's degree in special educa- tion at Wilmington College. She will start her teaching career this fall at the Jefferson School in Georgetown. Her fiancr, a 1989 graduate of Sussex Central High School, re- ceived a bachelor's degree from the University of Delaware and is currently employed by the state of Delaware, A fall wedding is planned. He is also a member of the Delaware State Fire Police, the National Rifle Association, Ducks Unlimited, the Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge and Lewes-Rehoboth Moose Lodge 646. The Redmen, which stems from the prerevolutionary organization The Sons of Liberty, is a patriotic, nonprofit brotherhood whose aim is to inspire a greater love for the United States of America, liberty and respect for the American flag. Upholding the traditions and his- tory of the country, the Redmen endeavor to keep alive the cus- toms and ceremonies of Native Americans, which they term a "vanishing race." Their rites and ceremonies are based on that of the Iroquois Na- tion, a democratic governing body. Distinguished fellow Red- men included President George Washington, Samuel Adams, Patrick Henry, John Hancock, and Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt. The Redmen support many charitable organizations and pro- grams, such as the Grange, Camp Barnes, youth farm safety, 4-H, the Children's Beach House, Stockley Center, Salvation Army, CHEER, Red Cross and the Ag Museum, provide bicycle helmets for children and scholarships for the children of Redmen members. Their nationally supported charity is the Alzheimer's Association and the local organization raised $5,381 this past year for the cause through their car, truck and tractor show. The women's organization is the Pocahontas Council, with young boys having a Hiawatha Jodi L. Sykes and John E. Messick Jr. are engaged. program and young girls the Winona Junior Council. Burton told those gathered that he owes his present position to past Great Sachem Marvin Light- cap, "who showed me the way - he would be proud of me today."
