Consultant offers tips on fighting 'Pfiesteria hysteria' By Michael Short How do you keep your business afloat when Pfiesteria fears are running rampant? That was the topic of a seminar offered on Thursday, June 25, by Sam Waltz of Sam Waltz and As- sociates Business and Communi- cations Counsel. Waltz offered several common- sense suggestions for businesses in coastal areas as they deal with fears about Pfiesteria. Such fears badly hurt seafood businesses fol- lowing fish kills in Maryland's Pocomoke River Ihst year. Pfiesteria was found in Delaware's Indian River last year and Pfiesterialike organisms have been found in the same area this season. There have, however, been no fish kills associated with the organism, which is usually not toxic. Waltz urged businesses to be honest, to not point fingers and to point out the many positive as- pects of the Cape Region. If Pfies- teria makes people reluctant to go in the water, be suggested that vis- itors be reminded of the antiquing, sunbathing, shops, bicycling and myriad other activities. Waltz was speaking to a small group of business representatives and scientists, part of a seminar on Pfiesteria sponsored by the Sussex County Convention and Tourism Commission, Delaware Restau- rant Association, Delaware De- partment of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Divi- sion of Fish and Wildlife and Uni- versity of Delaware Sea Grant. The seminar was held in Lewes and was entitled "Pfiesteria Pfacts: Don't Let It Get You Down." Waltz's firm deals with communications, problem solv- ing, business management and similar issues. Pfiesteria is a tiny organism linked to major fish kills and in a few instances, human health prob- lems. Such problems have includ- ed short-term memory loss and other disorders to people who come in di- rect contact with the or- ganism. JoAnn Burkholder of North Caroli- na was one of the first sci- entists to doc- ument the or- BURKIIOLDER ganism, dis- covering it only a decade ago. Burkholder suffered health prob- lems and one colleague actually forgot where he lived after direct exposure to the organism. He suf- fered speech impediments, memo- ry loss and disorientation, al- though he is recovering. But Pfiesteria has been around Delaware waters for at least a decade with no known health ef- fects, although it is linked to a pair of Indian River fish kills in the 1980s. The "cell from hell" became last year's hot environmental horror story and the confusing and often complicated organism was the subject of intense speculation and more than a little fear. The fear, often caused by uncer- tainty, prompted people to label the reaction to the tiny dinoflagge- late "Pfiesteria hysteria." Waltz offered several tips to businesses who must deal with the public concerns. First, he said you should be honest about the problem. That means not underestimating the problem, but not overblowing it either. "Be honest and straightfor- ward," he said. "If you are not, it is going to come back to you." Secondly, tell customers that there are a myriad of other activi- ties they can participate in. They can do everything from riding a train to going birdwatching and hundreds of other activities that Continued on page 65 ii!ii!i! ........................... !i!i!i!ili ' ii I .............. .............. :,,,:,i: ,,:, .... i::i: : ::::iili:ii ....... _ :::::,::i!iiiiiiiiiiE ......... :::::i::: ....... ..:.:.::::::::i:i!ii,ii:i:i;i,ii:i:i:;::7 ..........
