CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, July 3 - July 9, 1998 - 103 Rehoboth Art League offers two free lectures in July The Rehoboth ArtLeague is of- fering two lectures this July which are free and open to the public. Artist and art historian Ellen Notar will give a lecture on "Sym- bolism in Art," at 7 p.m., Thurs- day, July 16, in the Chambers Stu- dio at the Rehoboth Art League. "What is it?" and "What is it about" are often questions people ask about paintings. Sometimes they aren't asked because viewers already think they know what a painting is about. Landscapes, religious subjects, portraits and still lifes appear to be obvious. Yet beyond the literal recognition of the painting, the symbols may have become ob- scure with time. Symbols of older paintings may not appear as obvi- ous today as they did in the time period in which the work was cre- ated. In her lecture, Notar will dis- cuss symbols and their use in great works of art. "Work and Influences - Com- munication" is a slide lecture that will be presented by noted Wilm- fngton artist Mary Page Evans, who will explore art history's in- fluence on her own art and how it has helped her communicate through her work. The lecture will be given at 8 p.m., Tuesday, July 21. Educated at Hollins College in Virginia, the Art Students League in New York City, and the Corco- ran School of Art, Evans' work is to be found in many public collec- tions such as Delaware Trust Company, Bryn Mawr College and the State Museum of Pennsyl- vania. Her work was chosen in 1993 to appear in Spasso House, the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. Art critic Gene Davis described Evans as "...a hallelujah painter. Her lyrical renditions of flowers and land- scapes are hymns of unadulterated pure joy." For more information, call the Rehoboth Art League at 227- 8408. HAPPY" HOUR 5-7 Daily s 4-7 Sat. & Sun.
