108 - CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, July 3 - July 9, 1998 Quick Hitters By Dave Frederick STEELE SCORES FOR SOUTH - Scott Steele contributed a g0al for the South while playing a solid game at midfield as the South defeated the North, 18-14, in the 1998 National Boys North- South Lacrosse All-Star game played at Upper Arlington, Ohio. Kyle Campbell of Mount Hebron scored three goals for the South in earning MVP honors. He will at- tend Loyola College in the fall. The game was one of six lacrosse matches held as part of the 1998 Ohio Lacrosse Classic. The Na- tional North-South game was the feature game. Attendance at the North-South game was 4,500 while the day-long event attracted 6,000 lacrosse fans. OLD SCRAMBLE - Local golfers Pete Nehrbas, John Miller, George Barber and Rich Collins won the June 28 Old Scramble golf tournament contested at the Shawnee Country Club. The tour- nament is nationwide ("I'm bad, I'm nationwide!"), promoted by the Oldsmobile corporation. The foursome will now pick up a pro and compete at Hershey Mills, Pa., for the right to visit Las Ve- gas for the finals. Nehrbas also competed in the Art Shell Pro- Am to raise money for University of Maryland Eastern Shore. "I sat between Art Shell and Otis Sistrunck and felt like a midget," said Nehrbas, who stands 6'5" and weighs 220 - so he says. LUCY ON THE DIAMOND - Lucy Wilkinson recorded 13 strikeouts as the Lewes girls' 9- 10 all-star team defeated Mills- boro, 14-3, on Saturday, June 27. Bethany Pavlik and Lucy Wilkin- son were each 2-for-2 at the plate, accounting for five of the runs scored. The Lewes girls won their second game of the tourna- ment on Wednesday, July 1, at Greenwood, 17-6 over Rehoboth. Lewes Manager Steve Brinck said Laura Olenderski recorded 10 strikeouts for the winners. Bethany Pavlik hit a triple, scored two runs and also had two RBIs. Olenderski helped her own cause by hitting a single that drove in two and by scoring two herself. Amanda Hayton stroked two sin- gles and a double for her Re- hoboth team while teammate Laura Mitchell also provided some fire power with a single and a double. Cooling their heels on St. Maarten's hot sands Jim and Louise Hartzell of Geortgetown, left, and Vick and Dan Schnakenberg of Milton swapped the brown and gray of the Sussex County winter last February for the lush, palm- fronded soft and warm-sanded beaches of St. Maarten. The crew, with their Cape Gazette in hand, enjoyed Bikini Beach on Orient Bay- part of the French side of St. Maarten. Father and son and Cape Gazette take bite of Big Apple Mickey Downes of Rehoboth Beach visited the Big Apple, New York City, with his son, Mickey III, in February of 1998. As all trips to New York City must, their stay included a visit to the Empire State Building, once the world's tallest building. When he isn't off visiting places with his son, Mickey works aboard U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredge vessels as a con- struction inspector.
