36 - CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, July 11 - July 17, 1997 Church 00chedule Church Notes Unitarian Universalists service set The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware will host guestspeaker Michael Boblett, interim minister for Newark Unitarian Universalist Fellowship this past year, at a service set for 10:30 a.m,, Sunday, July 13, at the Boys and Girls (lub of Milford, 105 NE Front Street. Boblett's topic will be "Shaminism: It's Closer than You Think!". Shamanism brings up images of esoteric rites in the woods practiced by hunter-gatherers in furs and buckskins. Yet a surprising number practice in cities, working in offices and closer than you may think. Boblett graduated ffbjn Pacific School of Religion at Berkeley, Ca. in 1984 and has served churches in Tennessee, Michigan and California. He moves around the country serving congregations in transition. The author of a book of haiku poetry, he is a practitioner of Solo Zen Buddhism and studied languages ranging from Hewbrew to Sanskrit and is currently finishing a doctoral dissertation on the spirituality of gay men. Religious education will be provided for the youth during the July 13 service. Boblett will answer questions about Unitarian Universalists after the service at 12:30 p.m. This class will attempt to answer questions such as what John Milton, Susan B. Anthony, Thomas Jefferson and Clara Barton had in common- they were all members of either the Unitarian or Universalists faiths before they merged in 1961. They will discuss the characteristics of modem Unitarian Universalists as a tradition of deeds rather than creeds, and speculation of the future. The next planned event of this congregation will be a public meeting on Saturday, Aug. 16 with the Rev. Meg Riley, director of the Washington office for Faith in Action, on the topic of how organized religion can minister to gays, lesbians and transgendered persons. This meeting will be co-sponsored by the Metropolitan Community Church and will be held at their building on the Glade Road, Rehoboth Beach, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Riley, who is known as a moving speaker, will also conduct a service on Sunday, Aug. 17 at the Boys and Girls Club of Milford, beginning at 10:30 a.m. The title of her sermon will be announced at a later date.
