St. James celebrates seven years July 23
St. James Anglican Church will observe seven years of service to the
Lord and the traditional worship service of the World Wide Anglican
Community at the l0 a.m. service on Sunday, July 23. For its humble
beginnings when services were held in the living room of the rector, the
Very Rev. John Gains, to its move to a Millsboro motel conference
room and finally, to its own church home on Park Avenue in George-
town, St. James Anglican Church has been off6n'ingffaditional Angli-
can worship using the 1928 Book of Common Prayer and the King
James Version Holy Bible. Gains has long felt a need for a church in
the Anglican tradition, and in 1993, with a few parishioners, started
Sunday worship services in his Millsboro living room. Just seven years
later, services are being held in the new church home and Gains invites
all brothers and sisters in Christ to join the celebration.

St. George's Chapel open to public
St. George s Episcopal Chapel, located in Indian River Hundred, will
be open to the public from I to 4 p.m., every Tuesday and Thursday, be-
ginning July 17 through Aug. 31. Built in 1719 on land deeded to the
congregation on May 8, 1706, by Roger Corbett, the original church
was made of oak planks and 25 feet long, 20 feet wide and 12 feet high.
A 15 foot addition was added in 1725, with 200 people attending the
chapel. The chapel was destroyed by fire in 1792 and one year later
work started in the present early style and completed in 1794 in brick,
which was unusual'for that time and fired on the spot. The chapel now
looks the way it did 204 years ago. However, it was redesigned in 1850
and again in 1882 in a Victorian gothic style. In 1966 the building was
again restored to its original design and appearance with many timbers
as well as outlines from the early building identified at that time, thus
allowing a full patteren of original layout to be seen. The old parish
register from the 1700s still exists. St. George's Chapel is located on
Beaver Dam Road, known as County Road 23.
