CAPE GAZETYE, Friday, July 28 - Aug. 3, 2000 - 61 Sea Esta Motel opens fourth in Cape Region chain By Barbara H. Smith Alfred and Thelma Richardson made their dream come true in 1959, when they opened Sea Esta - the only motel in the Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach area that had air conditioning. Through the years, the family expanded the business by opening two more motels. Last month, the Richard- sons' grandson, George Metz, added another motel to the chain when he opened Sea Esta IV on Route 1, just a few blocks north of Dewey Beach. Metz's parents took over the first motel in 1982, and when his father had a stroke in 1985, Metz then became the proprietor of the motel. "I always wanted to have four motels, and now that Sea Es- ta IV is open I am finished. I am at the endof the line," Metz said. The original motel did not have phones until recently. Now all of the motels have dataport lines that allow guests to plug in their com- puters. Sea Esta IV also added a small heated pool to the first level in the center of the complex. An- other new amenity is an elevator that allows elderly and disabled people to easily reach their rooms. Stan Jiuliano of Ocean City, N.J., walked into the motel office and said, "I have two questions. First, do you have a room? And second, do you take dogs?" Metz replied "yes" to both questions. Jiuliano said he would be right. back; he had to get "the boss." He returned shortly with his Wife Phyllis in tow. They were both ex- cited that they had found a place that took their pet, Ling, a 9-year old sharpei, who Phyllis Jiuliano said must have her own bed. She said the couple of 51 years travels everywhere with their dog. After easing through a "soft opening" earlier this month, Find- ers Keepers partners have settled into an extended weekend routine with their new store. Metz described some of the pets of his guests through the years. "We once had a monkey; some guests once brought their pot-bel- lied pig; another time someone had a duck; and I think the most unique was a baby kangaroo," he said. Each year on the Columbus Day weekend, greyhounds and their humans go to Dewey Beach for a reudion. Metz said aH four motels are booked for the next two years for that event. The four motels are easily rec- ognized by their pine needle green and snow goose tan colors; the in- terior color is called calm air, which lends itself tO the peaceful, gentle feel of the room. The color schemes were chosen by Metz's wife, Cynthia, who is also the ac- countant for all of the motels.
