76 - CAPE GAZETYE, Friday, July 28 - Aug. 3, 2000 Movies The Edward Carter Gallery in Lewes will host a photogra- phy exhibit, aHenry Horenstein: Sea Creatures" through the month ofAugust A reception is slated for Saturday, Aug. 5. Edward Carter Gallery hosts 'Sea Creatures' during August The Edward Carter Gallery in Lewes will host its second sum- mer photography exhibit, Henry Horenstein: Sea Creatures. The exhibit will run through Aug. 31. The public is invited to attend the opening reception, set for 4 to 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 5. A photography instructor for 30 years, the last 17 at Rhode Island School of Design, Horenstein is a respected photographer whose work has been widely exhibited in museums and galleries. He is perhaps best known for his aca- demic texts, especially the classic text, "Black and White Photogra- phy: A Basic Manual." Horen- stein is currently completing work on a major new college pho- tography book, "Photographic Imaging," soon to be published by Prentice Hall. As a student at Rhode Island School of Design, Horenstein received both his graduate and undergraduate de- grees under the tutelage of Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. Horenstein has taught at Harvard and the University of Massachu- setts. Images from two of Horen- stein's most recem books, "Crea- tures," a collection of animal im- ages made in zoos and aquariums, and its companion book for chil- dren, "A is For? A Photographer's Alphabet," will be the focus of the exhibit at Edward Carter Gallery. "Creatures," a book of more than 50 striking animal photo- graphs, is Horenstein's 25th book and combines his love for animals with his passion and eye for fine art photography. The stunning pictures of land and sea animals - serene bot- tlenose dolphins, the tail of a whale, a school of carp, the nose of a bear, a bullnose ray - were photographed both in the wild and in aquariums and zoos. The photographs in this exhibition are a new twist on wildlife photogra- phy; Horenstein approaches these creatures close up and often at strange angles. His unusual points of view expose similarities be- tween creatures that are not al- ways apparent. His photographic process is also unique; the photo- graphs are taken with black and white positive film and printe d with color materials, giving the images extra dimensionality, as well as subtle tones and soft tex- tures. "These pictures celebrate both the living subjects and the meditative process of photo- graphing them," Horenstein. "The form of these creatures, and the feelings they invoke, allow sculp- tural elements to emerge from this two-dimensional medium." For information, call Dinah Reath or Sally Packard at 644-75 ! 3.
