12 TUESDAY, JULY 29- THURSDAY, JULY 31, 2014 CAPE LIFE cape Gazette 1 In early June, the South Beth- any Historical Society published "The Best Little Beach. In Dela- ware," a history book about the Town of South Bethany. The book has met with considerable success and has been nominated for the prestigious 2014 Gold Ink Award. The book contains many interesting personal stories and facts about the community, such as how it came to be known as The Best Little Beach in Dela- ware. With so many photos, past and current, it is not unusual for folks to find themselves, a family member, friend and/or house in the book. John Speer, the book coordina- tor chair and one of the founding members of the historical soci- ety, put together a team of about 15 society members who worked hundreds of hours to produce the full-color, 160-page book that contains over 300 photos, news clippings, advertisements, post- cards, letters, sales brochures, and more. Two of the newspaper advertisements show that in 1959 one could have purchased a 50-by-100-foot waterfront lot for $1,050. The cover of the book features a 1969 photo of six kids Obituaries )) Continued from page 11 Donna Cianciulli (Robert) of Fla- gler Beach, Fla., Joyce Horgan of Wilmington and Sheila Blakely of Milford; four grandchildren, Tara Blakely Boos (Charlie), Kenny Blakely, Mike Cianciulli and Matt Cianciulli; and two great-grand- children, Gavin and Eva Boos. The family would like to ex- press their gratitude to the staff of both Heritage at Milford, where Sophie was a resident for five years, and the Milford Cen- ter for her end-of-life care. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, July 28, at St. John's Catholic Church, 506 Seabury Ave., Milford. Burial will be held privately. Allan enjoyed a 40-year career as a material handling engineer with Chrysler Assembly Plant in Newark and Detroit, Mich., retir- ing in 2006. i He loved playing a round of golf with friends or tinkering with computers. If you had a computer problem, Allan could usually fix it. He recently rescued his canine companion, Coco, whom he dearly loved. Allan and Coco could be seen walking in their community numerous times a day, which brought him so much joy. Allan is survived by two sis- ters: Dorothy Patton and husband Carlton of Kentucky, and Linda Cavanangh and husband George of Newark; three nephews: By- ron, Miles and Michael; three nieces: Amy, Michelle and Marie; and his loving canine compan- ion, Coco. There are stories about how the town was formed, and who were the primary individ- uals behind its incorporation. Speer said, "The team did a tre- mendous job that will have a lasting positive effect on our community." Society President Maria Johan- sen said, "The origins of the book began two years ago when the society began interviewing early property owners and past mayors to capture their memories before they were lost. As the inter- view project went on, John Speer mused that he might be able to organize a team and produce an entire book using the interviews plus various other projects the society already had developed." Those projects included Building of the South Bethany Canals, the 1962 Storm of the Century, and Super Storm Sandy. The Town of South Bethany also was very helpful in providing materials on the town's past. . Group ] Design of Rehoboth was hired to create the back- ground theme.
