R&R Sports joins forces with Avis
By Michael Short
R & R Sports Center has com-
bined forces with Avis Sports.
Avis, whose slogan is "the hunt-
ing and fishing specialists", has
for two years been teaming up
with local outdoor businesses. The
idea is to provide local businesses
with the advantages offered by
major retail chains without losing
the personal touch.
Giant chain stores buy in bulk
and can slash prices because of
that bulk buying. Smaller stores
can seldom match the price, but
they can offer better service and
personal advice on where to find a
trophy wild turkey or a prize win-
ning largemouth bass.
The combination of the two
helps independent stores like R &
R compete with large chains by
providing service, price and selec-
tion, according to Gene Racz, one
of the owners of R & R. "We want
to be a pace setter. We want to be
a leader," he said.
In Delaware, four outdoor busi-
nesses have teamed with Avis.
They are Ocean Pro Shop in
Townsend, B & R Bait, Tackle
and Hunting Supplies in South
Outdoor

The original shop carries similar
items, including an extensive ar-
ray of shirts, but the original shop
Bethany Beach, R & R in Lewes
and Captain Mac's in Fenwick Is-
land.
Nationally, over 500 indepen-
dent outdoor businesses have
teamed up with Avis. "Whether
you've been hunting and fishing
all your life or are just getting
started, there are times when you
need some good old-fashioned,
straightforward advice. From
somebody who has been there,"
according to Avis Sportsman, the
newsletter for Avis Sports. "Your
local Avis Sports dealers, for ex-
ample. They live in the outdoors.
Hunting and fishing is their busi-
ness. They've field tested most
every product they carry. In short,
they know their stuff."
"It's our profession," said Gene
Racz. Racz said they joined with
Avis two years ago and haven't
looked back once. He explained
that the partnership means R & R
can offer more selection, better
prices and faster service such as
being able to order special orders
more promptly. "We do not have
to stock in depth. They have the
inventory," Racz said.
"It is a great program offered
tends to emphasize offshore fish-
ing tackle. Harbourside, on the
other hand, stresses Delaware Bay
fishing needs for flounder, trout
and the like. The shop has infor-
mation on local fishing boats and
carries a full line of bait and
for independent dealers," said Bob
Hall of Henry's Tackle and Sport-
ing Goods. Hall described Avis as
a service offered through Henry's
Tackle and Sporting Goods.
"Hem we have the hours and the
how-to," said Suzanne Racz. "The
outside consumer knows Avis is a
hunting and fishing specialist."
That personal touch includes
advice on fishing spots and lures,
the new hot baits, tide charts, the
best places to go dove hunting,
archery tips and free outdoor
videos available to customers. It's
a personal touch and knowledge
that they say you won't find at na-
tional "box" stores.
Gene Racz said that most na-
tional chains also buy the same
equipment for most of their stores,
meaning it might not work well
here. "What sells in Delaware
won't necessarily sell in Mary-
land." Avis offers hunting, fish-
ing, clothing and archery (a major
line for R & R) equipment. "They
helped us get involved in archery
and turn a hobby into a business,"
he said.
"It's a very positive relation-
ship."
enough tackle to sink a boat.
Harbourside is open seasonally
from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Once
the summer season ends, she says
the new location will probably re-
main open for morning and
evening hours.
