SCAC holds town meeting on the arts Sussex County Arts Council's latest roundtable forum, a town meeting on the arts with Delaware Division of Arts Director Peggy Amsterdam and staff, was held on Wednesday, July 13 at Possum Point Players Theatre in George- town. Representatives of several arts organizations in Sussex as well as interested individuals attended the informal meeting which focused on the needs of artists, audiences, arts organizations and communi- ties within the county. Amsterdam asked attendees to express what they felt would be the issues facing individuals and organizations in the arts commu- nity during the next few years and a variety of responses were forth- coming, with many common themes. Arts funding was given much attention, with the panel dis- cussing new grant programs avail- able through the Division of the Arts as well as private sector funding solicitation tactics. Another prominent theme with attendees was the need to expand arts opportunities and experiences to a larger base of participants from culturally diverse back- grounds. The topic of arts in education received substantial attention and was of great interest to all those attending the meeting. The need for teachers to have access to more specialized train- ing and involvement on the ad- ministrative level in arts program- ming, training and opportunities was emphatically expressed. Involving parents from the be- ginning of projects was stated as an excellent way to insure the suc- cess of arts programs. Through the course of the evening it became apparent that Sussex has a core of dedicated in- dividuals who are committed to expanding arts opportunities for the county's population. Among those from the Delaware Division of the Arts attend- ing the town meeting on the arts in Sussex County recently are (L to r.) Nancy Ebert, Peggy Wright, Peggy Amsterdam, di- rector;, Barbara King and Jim Yurasek.
