FAIR team investigates pedestrian fatalities The Delaware State Police Fatal Accident Investi- gation and Reconstruction (FAIR) team is investigat- ing a case in which an Indiana couple died after be- ing strack while trying to cross Route 1. State police spokesman Sgt. Walter Newton said it was approximately 11:20 p.m., when Norman J. and Janice B. Slamecka of Bloomington, Ind., started walking across the Route 1 northbound lanes from the area near the Lamp Post Restaurant. That area of the highway is not well lit, and traffic was steady. Anna J. Mercer, 82, of Lewes, was driving a 2001 Lexus northbound in the middle lane, when the cou- ple walked in front of the vehicle. Mercer was re- turning home after visiting friends at Brandywine Assisted Living at Seaside Pointe. Police believe the couple, guests at the Anchorage Motel, may have been crossing the roadway to go to a restaurant on the southbound side of Route 1. Mercer said police told her repeatedly that the ac- cident was not her fault. "Delaware State Police re- assured me over and over again," said Mercer. "1 can't say enough about how well they handled the situation." Norman Slamecka, 74, and Janice Slamecka, 78, were transported to Beebe Medical Center, where they died from their injuries. Mercer was not in- jured. The FAIR team is still investigating the case and asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call 645-8221. Police do not expect to file any charges.
