50 - CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, Aug. 8 -Aug. 14, 2003 Fixus Recovery collects the cash for overdue bills By Amy Reardon What can business owners do when customers refuse to pay for goods and services? Not every- one has time to hound debtors with letters and phone calls. Bills go unpaid for months and some- times years in extreme cases. Fixus Recovery Inc., a new col- lection agency in the Cape Re- gion, offers businesses a risk-free option. Fixus Recovery works on a contingency basis; the company gets paid when the client recovers funds. Boyd Russell's business, based in his Nassau home, opened its doors in January but went into full swing in April. Russell feels his business is es- tablishing a strong customer base throughout the state and in the Cape Region. "Often businesses will give you their worst bill as a test," said Russell. "They have nothing to lose by handing it over, and they want to see if you can recover it. Frankly, I'd do the same thing. I'm not go- ing to throw all of my business to you until I find out you can do it." Fixus Recovery focuses on business to business collections but can also do consumer collec- tions, skip tracing, recovery of un- claimed assets and post judgment recovery. Skip tracing, which tracks missing debtors, re- quires an hourly fee. "Sometimes businesses do all they can to collect their RUSSELL bills and finally have to go to court," said Russell. "But winning a judgment does- n't guarantee collection. The courts don't have the manpower to follow up." Fixus Recovery uses the latest techniques and a national network of skip-tracing professionals to Keen Roundtables to host public relations seminar Aug. 19 in Lewes The Ryan Rawlins Company, The Business Success Resultants, is sponsoring the first in a series of facilitated business discussions called Keen Roundtables. Communications and PR: How to Use It to Get Customers is the topic of the first Keen Roundtable business luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to i p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 19, at the Lighthouse Restaurant in Lewes. Keen Roundtables are designed to promote keen .business ideas to advance the growth of small busi- ness. The event is geared toward owners, managers and key em- ployees of I'ocal small business and family owned businesses. In a recent survey conducted by Ryan Rawlins, small businesses indicated a desire for more net- working opportunities and feed- back on how to increase business volume. The roundtable topic Communi- cations and PR: How to Use It to Get Customers will focus on strategies specific to increasing business volume through commu- nication methods and public rela- tions. Although Keen Roundta- bles are assisted by a qualified business facilitator, much of the benefits of a roundtable discus- sion is the sharing of ideas that have worked for other businesses. Ryan Rawlins' consulting serv- ices help small business owners to work more efficiently and effec- tively to gain the competitive edge. The company, whose slogan is Helping Businesses Achieve Suc- cessful Results, offers business services in problem solving, mar- keting and advertising, event planning, graphic design, public relations and strategic planning. "Sometimes there are legitimate reasons why people can't pay their bills," said Russell. "We have compassion and work with our clients and debtors to create payment plans. "It has to with the client. Some clients are willing to waive certain things to get a bill paid. The clients generate the time frame and the circumstances of the col- lection." Fixus' slogans highlight the im- portance of debt collection: "You haven't sold anything until the bill is paid"; "Nothing is more impor- tant than the bottom line"; and "Money doesn't grow on trees." The company's staff has more than 75 years experience in busi- ness and collection. Russell's background in business consult- ing opened his eyes to the impor- tance of proper collection proce- dures. "When I was a consultant, I would often find businesses with improper credit procedures or per- sonnel who didn't follow the pro- cedures," said Russell. "I would advice my clients to find local collection agencies to work with. "We had nothing to lose if we turned over a bill. I would say anytime you can get assistance and don't pay until you collect is a benefit." Russell plans to keep his com- pany small so his customers re- ceive personal treatment.
