Dewey clinic In cooperation with the Dewey Beach Feral Cat Soci- ety, The Delaware Humane Association (DHA) provided low cost care to well over a dozen rescued cats July 28. The DHA traveling veteri- narian clinic, a well equipped bus, makes month- ly visits to the area in an ef- fort to treat and control the abandoned cat population. In addition to spay and neu- tering services, the DHA team tests for leukemia, fe- line AIDS and can adminis- ter the rabies vaccine. The only time a cat is euthanized is upon a team decision, rest- ing on four factors: a posi- tive test, visible signs of seri- ous illness, colony manager's ability to care for and moni- tor the cat's health and the existence of alternative re- sources for the cat. Shown are Dr. Moses Lewis, left, and Dewey Beach Commissioner and Dewey Beach Feral Cat Society founder Ellie May- hew with a mellow yellow cat up for "examination. "He i s a wonderfully compassion- ate and well educated doc- tor. We are very fortunate to have him here at the beach so often," said Mayhew. Sum- mer traffic concerns prohib- ited the DHA from bringing its services to its frequent lo- cation, outside the Dewey Life Saving Station on Dagsworthy. Those monthly visits will resume by Octo- ber. The van is now sta- tioned near Gold's Gym.
